Problem with Large 88-Note Rolls
By Jim Canavan

I've got a Weaver (York, PA) 88-note player with Standard action, from 1925. Sometimes when I play large rolls, as it gets close to the end, the roll will stop for a second, catch itself, then move on. Sometimes it will do this several times in a roll.

I've watched closely, and noticed that when it does this, the takeup spool (and motor) are still turning...it seems like the paper is not winding itself tight enough on the takeup spool. I've tried increasing the spring pressure on the feed spool pressure pad, and although this appears to help somewhat, there are still rolls where the problem continues to happen.

What's strange is that it NEVER happens on some large rolls, SOMETIMES happens on others, and ALWAYS happens on others still -- QRS' "Wizard of Oz" roll is one the these culprits! It never happens on small/medium size rolls at all.

I don't think it's a governor or motor problem, since, as I said, the lower spool & motor continue to turn when the roll pauses. In fact, if I hold the feed roll for a second the first time it stops (letting the paper tighten on the lower roll), it won't stop again on that roll.

As a newcomer to players, I'm not sure if this is a common problem with playing very large rolls or not...can any of you experts offer some advice???

Thanks for your help!

Jim Canavan
