Scott Joplin Pen Name?
By Jim Canavan

Last weekend, I picked up a nice piano roll at a local flea market. The title is "The Fig Leaf Rag." I know that Scott Joplin did a rag with this title, and the roll does sound very Joplin-esque, but here's what the roll label says:

RYTHMODIK
A10802
The Fig Leag Rag (one step for dancing)
Wm. R. Lawrence
Played by Pete Wendling, assisted by W.E.D.
American Piano Co., New York, USA

Is "Wm. R. Lawrence" a pen name for Scott Joplin? Also, while I'm familiar with Pete Wendling, any clues as to who the mysterious "W.E.D." might be???

Thanks!
