Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
By Robbie Rhodes

Terry, thanks for the pointer to the Optical Character Recognition mailing list. It sounds like a good technical forum -- and not just a long-winded bulletin board -- so I'll write and see what's happening. Jody and I have investigated the structure of TIFF files, and agree that this non-proprietary format is well-suited to store the raster-scanned image of a music roll, with adequate spatial resolution to recognize lyrics.

Via fax today I sent Shin Ohkura a sample of the lyrics stencilled on an old "International Word Roll". It will be a challenge, I think: the paper was quite brown, and the blue ink had very little contrast. The next time I must experiment with yellow or orange gelatin filters.
