Veneer Sources
By Spencer Chase

Does anybody know who might have old mahagony veneer for repair to pianos from the teens and twenties. I am refinishing an upright Steinway that has a virtually perfect case with the exception of the fallboard which has two badly repaired scorches where the veneer is sanded through to the crossbanding.

I have ordered veneer from Constantine and fron Van Dykes. Both were supposed to be straight striped quater sawn African mahagony. They may very well be, but they don't look at all like the old stuff. I would rather keep the burns than use this new stuff. It looks like it came from a two foot diameter ten year old tree. It looks like Phillipine "Mahagony." The original probably came from the heart of a twenty foot old growth tree. Someone must have a stash of old veneer. Just 25 years ago you could still get it from Constantine. I don't need very much of it so I don't really care what it costs.
