WAV to MIDI: Rattling Cages
By Karl Petersen

I have lamented the lack of activity in the WAV->MIDI world lately, and decided to netsurf a bit. I chose areas of interest in the high-tech community which might bear fruit:

    pattern recognition
    artificial intelligence
    fuzzy logic
    neural networks
    wavelet transform
    piano

I found the following email addresses for persons active in these fields, all of whom have an interest in the piano:

    luciano@ifqsc.sc.usp.br
    bogdan@neuronet.pitt.edu
    d.g.cooper@leeds.ac.uk
    chen@cs.iastate.edu
    tanimoto@cs.washington.edu
    jberger@csmt.music.yale.edu

and the following for whom I have not yet found email addresses:

    Daniel Arfif, exMIT
    Charles Nichols
    Richard Kronland, Martinet
    Rolf Who"rman and Ludger Solbach

I sent the major WAV->MIDI abstracts and discussions from Claus Kucher, Matt and Robbie Rhodes on MMD 96.10.26 to all those above with email addresses, and asked if they would be interested in subscribing to a forum in which these matters were discussed. Two have answered, and I hope more will follow.

Perhaps it is only that I have slightly cold feet, but I wonder if we will be able to sustain a level of interest on this topic sufficient to ignite the interest of technical big-guns. Well, nothing ventured....!
