About a year ago, someone wrote in the MBSI Bulletin about finding a toy
tin car with music box made by Schuco. They were looking for more
information, and since my subscription lapsed, I am not sure if any
information was provided.
In yesterday's mail, I received the latest catalog from the Lilliput
Company (1-800-TIN-TOYS). Lilliput is a distributor for a European
company that is making new toys from the original Schuco dies. On page
3 of the catalog is a new item which sounds like a re-issue of the above
mentioned toy. Here is the description:
New! #5000 Radio Auto $299.50¶
Schuco finally retooled the Radio Auto after 52 years. Made from 1938-
1943, the #5000 had the shortest product life of any Schuco toy, hence the
desirability of the few extent originals. They have fetched more than
$4500 at auction! The "radio" is an actual music-box. You turn the music
on-off by moving the antenna. You set the steering by moving the fog
lamp. Automatic stop-go feature will bring a big grin! Tu-tone paint
jobs. Colors: Dark Blue / Light Blue, Dark Green / Light Green 5.62" long.
The 64 page color catalog has a picture of the Radio Auto as well as many
other tin toys, and new this year, 2 pages of Reuge & Jobin music boxes.
