White Spirit
By Richard Vance

> From: J.Wolff@ffp.csiro.au (John Wolff)
> White Spirit: 8008-20-6, Kerosene, petroleum
> White Spirits: 8042-47-5, White mineral oil, petroleum.
> An older reference lists "White Spirit" as a turpentine substitute,

"White Spirit" is the British English name for what is called Mineral Spirit paint thinner in the U. S. Don't try kerosene (called "paraffin" now in the UK.), it will never dry up. One assumes that Stoddard was not Charles Fuller Stoddard! "Naphtha" is now obsolete as a general term in the U.S., but is defined in the literature as any thin liquid petroleum fraction of about C7 to C10, which would be "mineral spirit."
