PTG and Pin Tightener
By Bob and Sonja Lemon

Terry Macham says, "Since most of these suppliers sell only to piano technicians, it would seem that many PTG members are in fact using pin tighteners."

Sorry, but while most PTG members are in fact piano technicians, not all piano technicians are members of the PTG ! As with any profession, there are large numbers of piano technicians who are independent and do not belong to the PTG. Also, one does not need to be a member of PTG to buy from the supply houses or to advocate the use of pin tightener.

To quote from Art Reblitz book, Piano Servicing, page 90: "If a piano is in good overall condition and if its value is such that it is worth restringing, then restring it. If its value is on the borderline, and if restringing would cost more than the piano would be worth when the job is done, then pin tightener might profitably be used. Once pin tightener is used, however, it may be necessary to replace the pinblock if restringing is desired later."

Art Reblitz does not mention using pin tightener on new pin blocks or when restringing.

Sonja Lemon, Associate Member, PTG, since 1979

[ Editors note:
[
[ My wife commented just now, "Why don't your readers talk to their
[ local piano techs about their questions?" A very sensible idea!
[
[ E-mail discussions cannot substitute for a trained technician --
[ consult your local telephone book, where you will find advertisements
[ by piano tuners and techs. Many will be independent, and some will
[ be members of Piano Technician's Guild (PTG), and may say "Registered
[ Piano Technician (RPT)".
[
[ Hopefully, all the techs who you deal with, PTG or not, will display
[ a love for pianos and a respect for your instrument, and will want
[ to do what they feel is best for a given problem.
[
[ With that, and with sensible comments from the two ladies, Jody and I
[ are suspending the discussion of pin tighteners and PTG. Readers
[ are invited to write privately to us at the "MMD Administrivia Desk",
[ rollreq@foxtail.com , which is our e-mail address (both of us read it)
[ for anything which is not to be published.
