Jelly Roll Morton Show
By Pete Woodworth

Greetings, all. I thought this would be of interest to the group:

"Jelly Roll," a musical celebrating the life of jazz pioneer "Jelly
Roll" Morton, will play at 8 pm Thursday, April 10, in the Harman
Hall in the beautiful new Performing Arts Center at Cal Poly, San
  Luis Obispo.

Kirk Taylor, accompanied by pianist Paul Asaro, stars in the two-man
show, voted best off-Broadway musical in 1995. Taylor, in the char-
acter of Morton, talks, sings, and dances his way through the early
  New Orleans jazz scene.

Critics say Taylor plays Morton with charm and spicy style, singing
with syncopated grace and dancing with an easy soft shoe. The musical
includes more than 20 of Morton's tunes, such as "Jelly Roll Blues,"
"Ballin' the Jack," and "Tiger Rag."

Tickets to the show are $7. to $15. For more information, call the
Performing Arts Center Ticket Office at (805) 756-2787, or see the
  'web site at:

        http://www.fdn.calpoly.edu/performingarts/PAC/frame.html

If you would like more information regarding accommodations here in San
Luis Obispo, write me.

Cheers.
Pete Woodworth

[ From all accounts I've heard it's a good show. When pianist Asaro
[ went on a vacation his substitutes were Butch Thompson ("Prarie
[ Home Companion" pianist) and Morten Gunnar Larsen of Oslo, both
[ fine interpreters of the Jelly Roll style. -- Robbie
