Decals
By Craig Brougher

Decals Unlimited is thorough and well-advertised, and has made a good
business by not saying "If we don't have what you want, tough." Instead,
they will make you any decal you can give them a clear picture of.

However, I am disappointed in the quality of their metallics, and
soundboard decals from them barely show up at all, because the golds
are all the same-- a pale tan color that doesn't show up on light wood
at all.

I have spoken to them about it years ago with no luck. The great old
decal makers always lay down an aluminum leaf paint first, and then a
clear gold over that which creates a true metallic. Decals Unlimited
shortened the process to a not-very-pretty gold paint. So I cannot very
happily endorse them for the quality of their decals. However, they
deliver on time, and they keep on top of things, and when you can't
find a decal anywhere else in the world, they'll get it for you.

As far as Knabe soundboard decals are concerned, I buy mine from American
Piano Supply Co. These seem to be the originals, and you can see the
medallions, even though they were not overlay gold. However, be very
careful because the black line on that decal is on top and very
susceptible to smearing from the solvents in the coating you put it
down with. I tried a Decal Unlimited and although it went on easily,
it didn't show up, and it cost about $50. That is 'way too much for
what you get, in my opinion!
