Davis Calliope Works
By Jody Kravitz

In August, 1983, I visited friends in Issaquah Washington. We went to a
park near their home where a large steam locomotive was on display.
While at the park I was attracted to the sound of a mechanical musical
instrument the likes of which I've never seen before or since. The sound
was coming from a Davis Calliope Works steam calliope. I spoke at some
length to the calliope's owner, who had brought the instrument to the
park just for the day. I also took a couple of photographs.

I've since been to several band organ rallies and have come to believe
that steam calliopes are very rare. I'd like to know more about this
instrument, but my attempts to locate the particular instrument or "Davis
Calliope Works" have failed.

At long last I have a working color scanner. I've scanned the two
photographs I took of the instrument and have placed them on the MMD Web
site:

I'm hoping to put more pictures up soon. I've got photos from two West
Coast organ rallies.
