Ragtime for Disklavier
By Rob DeLand

Ulrich, Hello! I saw your post to MMD and we are much alike. I bought a
Disklavier (MX100 Mk. II) last October and I bought the Giebler utilities
as you have. I have several sources of Disklavier files (Yamaha, Stahnke,
PianoMania) and MIDI files from rolls (mostly my own files, from selling
88-note and reproducing roll recuts; but also public sources on the Web).

To be honest, most piano roll files sound rather flat on the Disklavier,
in my opinion, and are not very listenable. Some exceptions might be the
hotter James P. Johnson rolls which just cook even without expression,
but any time I get the urge to hear any of those great rolls I simply put
my recut on the footpumper and have at it -- it is infinitely more fun,
and more musical. (And more authentic -- can I rattle anyone's cage with
that comment?!).

Some of the best pop stuff I've found on the web are John Roache's MIDI
library page (http://members.aol.com/ragtimers/index.html) and George
Bogatko's MIDI files -- super arrangements! George is a real hot-shot
and his files are a lot of fun: http://www.intac.com/~gbogatko/). You
can also pursue their recommended pages, but I just haven't had the time
to explore all the possibilities; I have too many other irons in the fire
at the moment.

I plan to record some good classical music through my friendship with a
member of the piano faculty at the University of Illinois later this
year, but nothing has happened yet. Most of my favorite of today's
ragtime artists have recorded for Richard Riley's PianoMania label
(referred to from another good page, the Ragtime Home Page's MIDI page
http://www.ragtimers.org/midi/). I need to call Richard and ask for
details as to what he has for sale, otherwise you can download some
samples from http://www.ragtimers.org/midi/pnomania/).

Now -- tell me what sources you have found in Germany! If anyone else is
selling good Disklavier disks world-wide I'd like to know about it.
We'll probably want to continue this dialog off-line, so I don't plan to
copy MMD on this topic after this. Anyone else who's interested is
welcome to contact me privately.

Regards,
Rob DeLand
