Mechanical Music in London, Oct 97
By Dan Wilson

Terry Smythe asks about MM events in London 15-26 October.

Unfortunately the only event inside that period I have news of is
a Player-Piano Group social meeting at Steve Greatrex's, Polvellan,
Harrowbeer Lane, Yelverton, Devon PL20 6DZ, at 3.30 pm on Saturday the
18th. This is only about 200 miles from London ! However, all will be
welcome, and his phone number is +44 1822 855694.

You will have missed the Friends of the Pianola Institute's Spanish tinge
recital, "Rolling Down To Rio", at the Purcell Room (3rd concert hall on
the South Bank site) on Friday 26th September -- nearly all Spanish and
Latin-American music from Duo-Art (pushup on concert grand) and pianola
(ditto), with mezzo-contralto Sylvia Clark.

Also Mike Boyd's PPG social meeting on Saturday 4th October at St
Leonards (about 70 miles from London) - Duo-Art and pedal uprights,
Knabe Ampico grand.

But on the Saturday you can always visit the Musical Museum -- details in
Andy Hood's post in MMD 970721, following. If phoning from overseas,
knock off the 0 and add (international+)44 :-

Hi, I saw the request for details of mechanical musical Instrument
museums in London and Paris. There is -- The Musical Museum, 368 High
  Street, Brentford, Middlesex. TW8 OBD. Telephone 0181 560 8108.

The museum is located in an old church and has a fine collection of
instruments, Hupfeld, Chickering, Steinway, Aeolian etc. Orchestrions,
Music Boxes, Street Piano etc. The first time I visited there I
really enjoyed myself and hope to visit again.

Slightly further afield in St Albans (25-30) from London is St Albans
Organ museum, 320 Camp Road St Albans, Hertfordshire AL1 5PB.
  Telephone 01727 851557.

 --- end quote ---

The easiest way to get to the Musical Museum is train from Waterloo
(which is where the South Bank site is) to Kew Bridge, turn right out
of the station and then it's about 1/3 mile along the main road.

A bit further afield, Steve Cox -- who makes Duo-Art recuts and sells
second-hand rolls at Pagham, Sussex -- and Dave Dibley, of the Pianola
Shop, Brighton, will be happy to gossip. Both about 55 miles from
London. Addresses:-

  Steve Cox, Laguna Rolls
  Laguna, Lagoon Road,
  Pagham, BOGNOR REGIS
  West Sussex PO21 4TH

  Dave Dibley, The Pianola Shop
