Repairing the Spring-motor
By Beatrice Robertson

Dear Terry, My suggestion on removing a disc music box spring is --
don't even think about it! I have the equipment to remove springs in
cylinder boxes, and sometimes even then, a large, early spring can be
a true "4-hand operation!"

There has been mention on the Digest of someone who will replace springs
(one of the phonograph people, I seem to recall). They would certainly
be willing to re-grease the spring for a fee. However, with springs,
I tend to agree with the "if it isn't broke, don't fit it" school.

Especially disc box springs: they have so much power, and create enough
friction in operating, that unless it is obviously rusted -- which is
easy to tell by the horrendous sounds when it occasionally hangs up on
the rust and then lets go -- leave it alone. Cleaning and oiling the
governor is much more critical to the operation of the music box.

My opinion, only!

Beatrice Robertson
