Melville Clark 1895 Prototype Player
By Dan Wilson, London

Recent exchanges about Melville Clark remind me of an item in an 1896
encyclopaedia I was loaned about twenty years ago. This was a full
technical article with halftone photos and diagrams about Melville
Clark's prototype 65-note upright player which he finished in 1895.
This was two years before the rival Pianola pushup was put on the
market.

The instrument was essentially a very bulky Angelus with large pouch
actuators in place of bellows pneumatics. The rolls were standard
65-note.

I haven't heard when this design was sold in bulk, if it ever was. Was
Melville an inveterate tinkerer ?
