Valve Leather
By Roger Waring

Hi all, Thanks to those who were kind enough to respond on my Standard
valve problems. I now know what 3/32" feels and looks like. The button
clearance above the level of the valve chest rim I have set to 1/16".
They work fine.

This brings me on to the subject of valve leather. What is the best
type for Standard metal seats? I have replaced using 1mm thick calf
similar to the original. Because of massive leakage initially I
thought that I had used the wrong sort. However, as a result of advice
offered and further testing I discovered that my clearances were not
spot on; also a few valve discs were sticking on the stem at a slight
angle, thus not seating fully.

During attempts to resolve my problems I tried the following coverings
on the inside valve facing:

1. 1mm calfskin, suede topside/smooth underside as described - OK

2. 1mm sheepskin, suede topside/smooth underside - useless

3. 1.5mm piano action leather (looks like calfskin), suede both
    sides - OK

4. 1mm calfskin as 1, but also covered by 0.25 mm Zephyr skin
    - brilliant

What do folk recommend? Is the extra covering of Zephyr skin a good
idea? Would it probably be just as effective glued direct to the fibre
disc without the intervening layer of calfskin?

Thanks again to all who so generously and freely give of their time and
knowledge.

Roger Waring
