Cracked Sounding Boards
By Don Teach

Since I have written a couple of times about nickelodeons I get private
E-mail once in a blue moon about them. One question about should be
addressed to MMD and here goes. What about cracks in soundboards?

My answer is to not worry, as they can be repaired. A cracked plate is
a different matter. Cracks in soundboards usually do not hamper the
sound of a piano. The problem with a crack is when the board is loose
from the rib and you hear a rattle. Many old pianos and some new ones
have cracks that you would never know about if someone had not pointed
them out. Cracks in the bridges can be repaired also.

When a total rebuilding of the piano is taking place would be an
excellent time to make these repairs.
