Piano Tech Correspondence Course & Piano Tuning
By Bruce Miller

Hi, Randy Burke wrote in MMD requesting information on Piano
Technician correspondence course. I took just such a course a
few years ago. I found it to be probably as good as it could be,
considering that it was being done by correspondence. I learned
a lot from it.

My only real comment (or complaint) was that when it came to learning
piano tuning, they insisted on doing it with one tuning fork and then
working by ear from then on (by counting the beats). I requested
information on using an electronic tuner and they basically scoffed
at me. Possibly, this has changed since then. Other than that, I was
very pleased.

The school was:

        Niles Bryant School
        3631 Stockton Blvd.
        P.O. Box 20153
        Sacramento, CA 95820

I would also recommend contacting The Piano Technicians Guild. Although
I suspect that this has changed; the last address I had for them was:

        P.O. Box 1813
        Seattle, WA 98111

They should have further information on these schools and their
locations. Possibly some other MMD reader will have a more up to the
date address.

Good Luck!

[ I hope our skilled piano tuners will comment on tuning by beats
[ versus using a machine. Can the machine properly stretch the
[ tuning for the best results with different piano designs?
