Ninth Century Mechanical Music
By Fritz Gellerman

The first documented mechanical musical instrument dates to the ninth
century in Baghdad, where the Banu Musa (sons of Musa) made a
cylinder-operated organ. See "The Organ of the Ancients," by Henry
George Farmer, London, 1931.
