Seek New Top-Hat Old-Style Ampico Boxes
By Bruce Clark

Thanks everyone for Ampico roll box suggestions. Tonnesen's roll boxes
are indeed very good quality. I have used many of the medium-size
boxes and find them to be very satisfactory replacements. They serve
double purposes for Ampico and Welte Rolls, but the top-hat old-style
Ampico boxes are not available.

I am interested in getting an *authentic* Ampico box reproduction made
up, for replacing Ampico top-hat style boxes, and possibly some larger
boxes with the gold Ampico lettering and a bit better quality than is
available today. Ampico roll collectors have discovered recently that
many original boxes are crumbling, and eventually will need to be
replaced. Do we replace them with an entirely different style and
shape of box? ( I don't.)

I had a good supply of original top hat boxes, that came from the
Ampico factory, but I have run out of them. I find that the original
labels can be removed by soaking in water, and re-applied to a new box
of identical size and shape.

These Ampico original boxes have a false bottom, and have gold letter-
ing AMPICO on the sides and top. I am wondering if any collectors are
interested in getting together and having some of the original style of
boxes manufactured, if we can. Box manufacturers will not make up a
few boxes, and need a large order before they will consider making a
run.

Putting an authentic label on a large box for a small roll presents a
problem (unless you are a kind of person who is satisfied with a piece
of adhesive tape with the title written on it with ball-point pen).

I prefer a nicely-printed label that resembles the original label, or
the original label itself if it can be removed and transferred. Very
nice reproduction labels can be made using a computer. These are hardly
distinguishable from the original labels. A small roll in a large
box rolls around seems out-of-place. Some newly-manufactured boxes look
nice...but in a short time the bottoms wear out, because they are
thinner than the originals.
