Payment for Foreign Purchases
By Philip Jamison

Here are some ways to send money to a foreign country:

International Postal Money Order

Check the exchange rate (use the WWW) and purchase these at any Post
Office. They are sold in U.S. Dollars and you mail the check to St.
Louis along with the address of the recipient. It is then converted to
the foreign currency and sent to the recipient.

Traveler's Checks

AAA, American Express and some banks sell Traveler's checks in
foreign denominations. The exchange rate is usually good, but you're
limited to round numbers.

Foreign Drafts

Most banks sell checks drawn on foreign banks in their currency.
Cost is $15.00-$30.00.

Chase Manhattan Bank Drafts

Chase Manhattan Band (and perhaps a few other big banks) sell
cashier's checks through smaller banks. These are in US $, but can
be cashed in most countries since Chase has branches all over.
I pay $3.00 per check here.

Ruesch International Checks

This firm sells checks in foreign currencies drawn on foreign banks.
The rates are good, and you can purchase them over the phone once you
have an account with them (no charge). Cost is $3.00 per check, and
service is fast.

  700 Eleventh Street NW
  Washington, DC 20001-4507

Be aware that European banks can charge hefty fees for cashing checks,
but these are usually included in the amount you pay. Of course, you
can also send cash, but do this with small amounts only!

Beginning next year, European payments will be considerably simplified
with their new universal currency, the Euro.

[ Small firms who don't normally conduct international business
[ probably don't include fees for foreign currency exchange in
[ their prices. Spare the seller the inconvenience and embarrasment,
[ and _ask_ if he is willing to accept checks issued by foreign banks.
