Lakeside Piano Rolls
By Bryan Cather

Recently I purchased a roll that has me wondering: The brand is
"Lakeside", but it looks suspiciously like one of the early US Music
"88"-note rolls.

The design on the label is similar, but not identical, and the box
is the same tan/brown color as Vocalstyle's tan boxes (without the
Vocalstyle embossed logo, of course). Otherwise, it looks just like an
early US Music roll: the flanges are the same, as well as that skinny
little tab. Furthermore, the tempo marks, expression line, etc. are
just like on early US "88" rolls.

Was "Lakeside" a department store brand? Or was it a cheaper (or more
expensive) brand made by US, like "Imperial " and "QRS" did in the
1930s? I have seen "Lakeside" pianos, too. Did US Music have some
kind of arrangement with them to provide custom-labeled rolls, perhaps?

I don't have the number handy, but the title is "Over the Waves", and
it is a marimba arrangement. Perhaps someone has a copy of this on US
Music, and we can compare numbers -- I'll bet they match!

If they do, the next question is "why?"
