Quality of Pianos
By Bryan Cather

The disparaging comments about the poor quality of many modern pianos
bears out something I've felt for a long time: It you really want a
quality piano, you're often better off purchasing a solid upright made
sometime before about 1930 ( after having it checked carefully by a
trusted technician) for around $500.00 (maybe less!). Then, have the
piano rebuilt -- a total, screws-polished rebuild, from the soundboard
out.

If the technician is really interested in quality work, you will
usually have a better piano at the end than had you purchased a
new instrument for the same amount of money. Unfortunately, PSOs
("Piano Shaped Objects") are the going thing now, not quality musical
instruments.
