Transferring 78s to CDs
By Deane Wiley

I think probably everyone has read all they need to read about
transferring 78 rpm records to CD. I could go on at length as to
why the MiniDisc is not a satisfactory tool for transferring 78 rpm
records, or any other kind of music, that one wishes to be almost
_universally_ playable in other peoples homes and in a variety of
configurations, i.e., the auto, while jogging, etc., etc. Almost
everyone I know has a regular CD available to them. Almost no one
I know has a minidisc player when I go to their house with a minidisc
to have them listen. (I probably just don't know the right people !!)

This may well be the beginning of another media tussle reminiscent of
the argument between the Sony VCR and the eventual winner, the VHS VCR.
Or perhaps it can be likened to the argument over the 33-1/3 rpm 12-inch
disc, the 10-inch 33-1/3, and the 45 rpm. I am not willing to get into
the argument -- I don't have enough time away from my CD "maker"!! To
anyone interested in making their own _standard_ CD's which can then be
played in their auto, or in their friends auto, or in anybody's CD
player and their own, the following information might be of some use.

While there are a myriad of CD writable "things" on the market, the
_most_ versatile, most flexible, and the one that will do it all in
the audio area, is the:

  Philips CDR 765 CD Recorder/Play, Model # CDR 765 BK02

This is, I swear (gently), my last words in this area, unless someone
gets the above machine and wants some help with it. ( No! I do not
have a fiduciary interest in Phillips!! But I wish I did!)

I bought my machine "on line" but I understand that they are becoming
available at places like Circuit City etc. etc.
