Different Sounds From Similar Instruments
By Hal Davis

Band organs are definitely _not_ all voiced to sound the same, even
though they are of the same style or model. A case in point that
I can personally cite was at a Mid-America Band Organ Rally at the
Stage Coach Stop in the Irish Hills near Jackson, Michigan.

I had several brand new 150 rolls that I had just made and was talking
with some of the owners of several of the Style 153 Wurlitzer Band
Organs that were there. At one point each of the three owners I was
talking with agreed to play their instruments separately, using the same
roll then using different rolls.

All three of the 153s sounded quite different, and I could have easily
turned my back to them and still known which of the three was playing
because of the difference of the tone of each.

That's the only time that I can recall ever having the opportunity to
hear three Style 153s sitting right next to one another. I've heard
lots of 153s as well as other models over the years, and the difference
in their tone is almost startling when considering they were supposedly
the same organ.

I've noticed the differences in Style 146s as well, but then, they were
known to vary to several degrees right out of the factory.
