Clarifying the Pianohorse
By Ana Gerard

I realized that actually nobody knows of this fabulous invention, the
Pianohorse! It's sorta hard to describe but I'll make a stab at it.
It is a welded steel frame that sits under the front of the piano and
takes the place of the left leg but supports the entire front of the
piano. It is constructed so that one person can tip the grand up onto
its legs (or down onto a board as the case may be) and you can even let
the piano rest at a 20 or 45 degree angle if you needed to (not that
you would really want to but...)because of its unique design and precise
engineering. The tuner who showed this at one of our PTG meetings
moves all his grands alone - try that sometime! With this piece of
equipment, the pedal lyre never comes in contact with the floor, the
front edge never hits the floor, etc. (I'm thinking of Ed Chaban's
recent letter re: Brooke's Piano Movers with them canceling his contract
because the lack of the lyre was a "safety violation" - lucky him that
he got a new mover BUT it took four guys to do the move!) Yes you can
move a smaller grand with 2 people but I have reams of articles about
fixing broken lyres, legs, repairing dings from moving, etc. let alone
the possible injury to yourself from a slipping or falling piano. I
figure somebody was watching over me when I moved pianos "thataway" but
now I have the Pianohorse. Seeing is believing - he has a video that
you can get - it will make a believer out of you.
