Quality of Music Roll Arrangements
By Jerry F. Bacon

Here I am again, I have been reading the MMD Archives, usually one
month a night, and have come across many discussions as to roll
arrangements, so I thought I would also stir things up a bit. As you
all know many different kinds were made in order to satisfy everyone.
I do find (and this is only my personal opinion on this) most QRS
rolls made from about 1924 to maybe 1946 rather boring.

Now I recently obtained a Fotoplayer and most of these rolls sound just
great on it. I myself prefer QRS rolls from before the word roll era
and from 1919 to 1923. Imperial rolls are almost without equal from
1915 to 1924, until QRS got them. I like most U.S. Music rolls until
QRS got them also.

My basic points are that (a) many otherwise boring rolls come alive
on a Fotoplayer, and (b) companies had a certain, sometimes brief, era
when the arrangements sparkled.

Sincerely, Jerry F. Bacon
