Removing RealPlayer (for RealAudio Files)
By Mike Ryan

This responds to Craig Brougher's problem uninstalling RealPlayer
which, like many other programs, has left tendrils throughout his
system. I've had this problem with many programs and getting rid of
them is like getting rid of mould.

I have a suggestion, but I don't want anybody to do this for a few days
because I expect that several people -- starting with Robbie -- will
correctly point out how dangerous this is and what an idiot I am for
suggesting it. Also, there must be a better solution.

[ The computer won't explode, so it's not dangerous. Computer
[ technicians do it, so it's not idiotic. Yes, it's a tricky
[ process, but with sensible precautions (backup your files before
[ experimenting) it can be successful. I say the same about working
[ on automobiles and mechanical musical instruments! ;-) -- Robbie

Go to Start/Run and type in "regedit". This takes you to your Registry
Editor, which is where you can do brain surgery with your keyboard.

Go to Edit/Find and type in "RealPlayer". Every time you find an
entry with "RealPlayer" in it, delete it. Do the same for "RealOne"
and "RealJukebox". This may take a while, because installing a program
like RealPlayer will make all sorts of changes to your registry.

Again, don't even consider my suggestion until you have read all the
responses telling you why you shouldn't mess with Regedit. Also,
check the Internet for "RealAudio" _and_ "regedit" for more intelligent
discussions of this topic.

One final comment. Often, but not always, programs like RealAudio will
offer you options at installation regarding what type of files you want
to associate with the program. Carefully limit those choices and try
to deselect .wav, .mpeg, .mp3 and .mid files, for example. I have
RealAudio, but I limited it at installation to play only RealAudio
(.ram) files.
