Organ Rally in Sierra Madre CA 6 July 2002
By Frank and Shirley Nix

July 6th found the Southern California Chapter of AMICA at the
annual Fourth of July organ rally in Memorial Park in Sierra Madre,
California. There wasn't a lot in the way of public participation
this time, although those who did come were there because they knew
we would be there, and they were a very appreciative audience. (That
doesn't include those who come looking for the monkeys, of course!)

We had a good turnout of instruments, with a couple of new twists this
year. Richard Ingram brought out a player piano, and he and his twin
brother were there in their patriotic regalia, and their piano is
painted red, white and blue. This was a very popular display up on
the stage, with lots of rolls for people to pick from.

In the Senior Center, Bill Blair had a display of music boxes, automata
and bird cages, which he demonstrated on request. He also had his
Wurlitzer and Pell organs, so he kept busy all day.

In the park we had Jack Conway with his usual great display of his
Tangley calliope on his Model A truck and his Perlee monkey organ.
Lloyd Osmundson was there with his Hofbauer, and he always has a very
visually attractive display, thanks to the efforts of his wife Brooke,
who made beautiful covers for the organ.

Of course, Dave Wasson was there with "Trudy", which is better every
time he brings her out. Charlie and Jackie Porter were there with
their big organ, "The Spirit of San Diego", and newcomers Peter Breede
and Bill Klinger had monkey organs they had made themselves. Frank Nix
had his Hofbauer and his Perlee monkey organs.

Frank and Peter took their monkey organs across the street to serenade
the residents of the convalescent Home for a while. This seemed to be
a popular practice.

There was a cool breeze blowing all day, which made it just perfect,
and the music filled the park. We all enjoyed the day, and next year
with Saturday being the day after the Fourth it should be more crowded.
They have even said they will try to leave the beer garden in place for
us next year, so that should draw in a lot of people.

Our next rally will be in Fullerton in October for their Arborfest.
This is always a favorite, since there is a lot to do and see, and
large crowds. Come join us!
