Zinc Discs Slipping In Olympia Musical Box
By Claudine Jones

Along with new acquisitions come new concerns. I now have a large
Olympia disc box with quite lovely tone and resonance. The difficulty
is with the disc design: when the disc reaches a point where there is
a missing drive projection it stops, and the result is that it gets
out of sync and if there are too many of these gaps, the tune will
eventually end early.

I've looked at the MMD Archives and find only one posting which deals
with repair of zinc discs (Colin MacKinnon, 2001.12.20). While it is
quite detailed, I still feel in need of coaching through the process.
I only am interested in fixing a few really good tunes that are spoiled
by this slippage.

Also, would there be any reason to suspect wear on the drive wheel?
Only asking because some of the new discs have suspicious slippage --
very minor, but slippage nonetheless.

The more I complain, the more guilty I feel; actually, this box sounds
so wonderful when it's working correctly, I guess I'm spoiled.
