Controlling Windows 98 Folder Views
By Tom Lear

Hi All, I just wanted to share this hint for all you Windows 98 users
who may be having difficulty getting your folders view to consistently
display as you have set it. For two years, I have been searching the
Microsoft data base for this fix and have come up empty, nor were any
acquaintances able to figure it out.

The problem was with setting all folders to display in details. No
matter how many times I set it up, the display would always revert to
large icons.

It turns out there is a "secret combination" of settings in View,
Folder Options that will finally stabilize the details settings. Since
following the procedure below, I have had no further trouble with those
pesky large icons popping up.

Caveat: this procedure may change the appearance of your desktop,
but I believe it can be restored, as mine is back to "normal" now,
although now I do not remember just what I did to do that. :o)

From Microsoft Support:

1. Double click on My Computer
2. Click on View, then choose Details
3. Click on View again, then Folder Options...
Note: For some reason Details will not work while Folder Options
is set to Classic Style, so,
4. Choose "Custom, based on settings you choose" then click on the
    Settings button.
5. Make sure that "Enable all web-related content on my desktop"
    is chosen. Click on OK.
6. Click on the View Tab at the top.
7. Then click on the "Like Current Folder" button at the top.
You will get a verification message, click on "Yes".
8. Click on OK. [Then click on Apply, then Close. -- Robbie]
Note: If at anytime the Display Properties windows
     appears, just close it.
9. Now all windows will be displayed in the Detailed View.

[ That's great, Tom. Now: how can I control the default display
[ in the "Open" and "Save As..." windows? Several weeks ago
[ they decided to display the filenames sorted backwards, and
 [ now I can't change the default. -- Robbie
