Unknown Overture Heard on 38er Voigt Concert Organ
By Nicholas Simons

I'm sorry to spoil the party but I don't think the unknown tune heard
on the Voigt organ is Hungarian Comedy Overture by Keler-Bela. I have
this on my 52-key street organ in a Carl Frei arrangement and the tune
is definitely different.

When I listened to Bill's MP3 file I recognised his tune as one I have
heard once on one track of one of my many organ recordings, but I could
not locate it. With today's clue I have now rechecked and found it:
record CM 2097 of Schickler's 62er Wrede plays Bill's tune and names
it Ungarische Lustspielouverture, arranged by Van Boxtel. Although in
a considerably different arrangement, it is unmistakably the same tune
as Bill's.

We now have a problem. Is my Carl Frei Hungarian Comedy really another
tune (although I doubt this as I trust Carl Frei and I have heard this
tune similarly attributed on other organs), or is Bill's tune really
something else? Incidentally, Keler-Bela was born Albert von Keller
in 1820. Does anyone care to add to the debate?

Nicholas Simons, GB

[ The overture composed by Bela Keler bears similar titles in
[ different languages. If the song played on your 52-key organ is
[ not the song at http://mmd.foxtail.com/Sounds/ then maybe yours
[ is wrongly labeled. Errors of this sort happen when book music
[ and roll music is carelessly copied. -- Robbie
