Wurlitzer 165 Organs at Lincoln Park & Griffith Park
By Glenn Thomas

Hi Matthew, Thought I might help your memory a little with these
two Wurlitzer 165 organs. As far as I know from personal experience
and memory, these two organs were not swapped, at least from the early
1950s to the date of their final removal. I spent much time at those
parks as a tiny tot with a good memory in the 1950s to an adult through
the 1970s.

You are correct with all the information you provided about these two
organs, but if you visited Ross Davis around 1960 in Griffith park you
probably saw the 1939 165 with the 157 front, as that was the organ
that resided continually at Griffith Park.

Most, if not all, of the professional recordings that Ross Davis made
were recorded at Lincoln Park on the vintage 1924 true 165. Ross may
have made some tapes from the Griffith Park organ, but those were not
used commercially, as far as I know.

Now, if only these two organs were still out and on public display...

Ed Openshaw has had the Lincoln Park 165 for many years and it is still
not playable, as far as I know.
