Stella Discs Must Be Lubricated Every Playing
By Ken Vinen

Thanksgiving greetings to all from Canada! I have been reading
with interest, the topic of lubrication for Stella Music Box Discs,
because I have a large floor model 17-1/4-inch disc player in my home.
With it is the original "Stella" oiler.

The original instructions are: "The underside of tune sheets is
slightly oiled before shipment, but when through the action of the
atmosphere and use of the instrument, the tune sheets become dry and
a crackling noise is produced in playing; this will disappear if the
underside of the tune sheet is slightly oiled by means of this pad,
which should be kept saturated well with mineral oil."

Possibly by standards of today, mineral oil is not considered the best
choice, but that was the original requirement, for those who like to
keep things totally correct.

This original Stella accessory is not too common. It is in a round tin
with friction fit top, about 3 inches diameter and 2-1/2 inches tall.
Inside is a very hard and dense felt disc, 3 inches across and 1/2 inch
thick. This is fastened to a nicely shaped wood handle.

Musically yours
Ken Vinen, Stratford, Ontario, Canada
