Reversing Induction Motor Rotation
By Spencer Chase

Greetings, Bob Taylor mentions that Ampico and Duo-art motors turn
in opposite directions. Many of them are easily reversed as the
connection of the start winding is made externally.

If there are insulated screw caps for the mains connection wires, these
same terminals may have the start windings connected to them. If this
is the case, the motor direction may be reversed by simply moving each
start winding connections to the opposite terminals. It does nothing,
of course, to reverse the main connections.

If the connections are not made externally, it is still possible to
reverse the motor direction by finding the internal connection of the
start and main windings and reversing the start winding there. This
may be difficult to so if the insulation is hard and brittle.

This is mentioned because these motors are difficult to find and are
greatly superior to most new motors in terms of quietness. It is
usually not necessary to dismiss a candidate motor on the basis of
direction of rotation alone.

Best regards,
