Commercial General Liability Insurance
By Joe Orens

Although my reason for needing Commercial General Liability Insurance
as an individual is not based on a transportable instrument, it is based
on an issue related to the storage of mechanical musical instruments.

Having had personal homeowner's, automobile, umbrella, etc., insurance
with the same company for over 25 years, and being familiar with
Commercial General Liability Insurance for a business, I had assumed
that obtaining Commercial General Liability Insurance as an individual
would not be difficult. It turns out that my assumption is incorrect.

First, I contacted my personal insurance broker. The coverage I needed
did not fall under my personal insurance coverage and, although, they
tried to be very helpful and made suggestions, after numerous telephone
calls, I was unable to obtain the insurance that I needed.

Then, I contacted our business insurance broker. Initially, they
thought that getting Commercial General Liability Insurance as an
individual should not be difficult and would contact the insurance
underwriters that they represented. The insurance underwriters that
they represented were not interested in issuing the necessary policy,
but our business broker made a suggestion that turned out to be
successful. They suggested that I contact a broker or licensed
intermediary that represents Tapco Underwriters, Inc.

What I learned is that Tapco Underwriters, Inc. is willing to take the
time necessary to pursue the availability of a source for types of
insurance not ordinarily requested. Tapco Underwriters, Inc., did find
a reinsurer that would issue the appropriate policy.

I also learned that the cost of such insurance is higher than what
I expected, based on what I assumed would be the risk exposure.
Unfortunately, there was not much opportunity to do comparison
shopping.
