Player Organ in Movie "The Great Race"
By Richard Simonton, Jr.

-- non-subscriber, please reply to sender and MMD --

Dear MMD, Paul Morris inquired about the player organ console in the
film, "The Great Race". I read a story once about how Blake Edwards,
already way over budget for the film, had gone to Jack Warner to say
that he needed a pipe organ for a visual gag with Jack Lemmon, and
I know that the console was built for the film.

My father had a set of dummy organ pipes, which were borrowed and
never returned. They had previously been the feature of our annual
rooftop Christmas display. I think I remember the name of the man as
Chuck Baker, who built the console for Warner Bros. Many of the parts
were genuine, although it was only a prop.
