MIDI & Mechanical Music Instruments
By Andrew Springman

-- non-subscriber, please reply to sender and MMD --

Hi! I'm Andrew Springman, president of ittyMIDI.com. There has been
a recent surge of interest in our ittyMIDI Player on the Mechanical
Music Digest forum. It resulted in sales and got our interest. So we
are trying to learn more about this community and the uses of MIDI for
mechanical musical devices. Also, I wanted to take the opportunity to
say thanks.  Thanks!

I've been reading back articles to try to understand how MIDI is used.
There is the obvious use of equipping the device with a MIDI in port
and playing a MIDI file in real time. We assume that is how our
product is being used. However, I was intrigued to find that rolls
are being made from MIDI files. I had heard of making MIDI files from
piano rolls, but not the other way around. It makes a lot of sense.

I'm sure this is not the only discovery I will make. Please let me know
the various ways you all use MIDI. Also, what would you like to do,
but can't yet?

Blessings,
Andrew Springman

 [ Here's a short summary of how MIDI is used today:
 [
 [ 1. Pianos & orchestrions & crank-organs are controlled by Standard
 [ MIDI Files (SMF) that store an image of the traditional music roll;
 [
 [ 2. Solenoid pianos are controlled by specially prepared Standard MIDI
 [ Files (some with synth accompaniment);
 [
 [ 3. Many arrangers around the world now use MIDI files and MIDI editing
 [ programs as their primary arranging method for punched cardboard book
 [ music and punched paper music rolls.
