Joyland Park's Wurlitzer Mammoth Band Organ
By Ed Kretlow

-- non-subscriber, please reply to send and MMD --

This message is for Damian K. Mayes, regarding the old Wurlitzer band
organ that used to be (still is?) at Joyland Amusement Park in Wichita,
Kan.

In a 2000.12.13 MMD message, you mentioned that the organ was all
disassembled, and that it may be headed for its demise. Is there any
more current news about this great instrument or about the park itself?

I grew up in Wichita in the early 70's, and have great memories of
"Joyland Louie," the clown who "played" the Wurlitzer Mammoth. We went
back to visit Wichita in the late 90's and saw it still in operation.
It sounds like we might have gotten there just in time!

Thanks,
Ed Kretlow

P.S. Was any video every captured of the Wurlitzer in action? I have a
little video of it.

[ Damian Mayes is no longer associated with Joyland Amusement Park,
[ and according to recent reports to the MMD, the park did not open
[ this year. A search in the MMD Subject Archives
  [ (http://mmd.foxtail.com/Archives/KWIC/index.html ) under the keyword
[ Joyland will update you on the recent history of the park and its
  [ Mammoth organ.
