Old-time Organ Grinder in Charlottesville, VA
By Dennis Windsor

-- non-subscriber, please reply to sender and MMD --

My name is Dennis Windsor and I am proud to say that I am one of only
a handful of "old organ grinders" left. With my sidekicks, Sheli, Joy
and Jo-Jo, we have been bringing smiles to America for 30 years.

I was trained by the famous Joseph "Jo" Lopez. I met Jo when I was 12.
His father was Mexican, but Jo spoke Italian and broken English. He
came to the U.S.A. from Italy in 1913, and he died in 1985 at 90 years,
working his monkeys up to a week before his death.

I work in Charlottesville, Virginia. I used to know about 25 organ
grinders; today me and a man in New Jersey are the only grinders I know
who are living and working.

I have bought and sold a lot of organs in the past. Today I own nine
organs. My favorites are a 20-note L. Bacigalupo and a 26-note
Heinrigh and Heigt that has 39 pipes. I also have a 41-note Bacigalupo
that has 90 pipes, a G. Bacigalupo, a Molinari, and a few German organs.

My L. Bacigalupo was built in 1940 by Luigi Bacigalupo who was
unrelated to the Bacigalupo family. He married a daughter of Giuseppe
and carried on the organ business of G. Bacigalupo. Louis Bacigalupo
was the first son of Giovanni. Louis started the West Coast Organ Co.
in 1906 and ran it until his death in 1957.

I have two organs that I need some history on if you can help. They
are by H.S. Taylor, 189 Chatham St. and 66 New Bowery of New York.

Thanks,
Dennis Windsor, The Monkey Man - keeping alive a vanishing art
