FS: Knabe Ampico B with Ampichron
By Berco Landman

-- non-subscriber, please reply to sender and MMD --

For sale: my 5'8" Knabe Ampico B with factory installed Ampichron and
Capehart switch, bench, collection of rolls (including chime roll),
piano cover and key cover. Option: installed Spencer Chase E-valves
and roll database.

The piano has been fully restored, has a beautiful tone and expresses
extremely well.

I acquired this Knabe about one year ago from Florida. The piano and
Ampico was believed to be restored, but finally I ended up in redoing
the complete Ampico B system, drawer, and Ampichron clock. The piano
was restrung and repinned when I bought it, but I decided to give it
a new set of bass strings. The hammers and dampers were done in the
previous restoration. The mahogany case was also already nicely
refinished in a dark stain. Also the keytops have been professionally
replaced in the previous restoration.

Most of the work I have done was focussed on the regulation of the
piano and the total restoration of the Ampico B system. All bellows
have been redone, all valves have been completely dismantled and all
pouches, valve facings, etc., renewed. All valves were individually
tested on a test rig. Expression valves and C-pouches have been
renewed also. All tubing has been replaced (including drawer).

The Ampichron clock was functioning but it made a lot of noise, so the
clock and clock motor were also fully dismantled, re-polished, cleaned,
etc. Also I installed a 50 to 60 Hertz electronic converter to have
the Ampichron also running on time on the 50-Hertz mains supply in
Europe. The converter is a small electronic board invisibly built into
the drawer, but it can of course be easily removed.

I have installed the Spencer Chase E-valves in the piano. (For my
installation pictures see Spencer's new manual, subject "Ampico B in
progress", http://www.spencerserolls.com/ ). With this system goes a
library of more than 1400 rolls (Peter Philipps erols). The potential
buyer may decide to take the piano with our without the E-valve system.

With the piano goes a printed photo book with a full history of the
restoration, original purchase papers and documentation. Many pictures
are available and can be emailed on request. Please contact me for
further details and asking price.
