Recutting Piano Rolls
By Bob Billings

Erik York asked if someone can provide small numbers of recuts from an
old roll. Two companies I know of that can do this are Custom Music
Rolls (Richard and Janet Tonnesen) and Sierra Music Rolls (Bob
Billings).

Erik asks if he can get a playable and archivable single copy, at less
than the small run cost of about $60. The cost of a small run (five
copies) and a single copy are about the same because the reading and
setup times to make a run are the same for any number of copies.
Perforating a typical popular roll is a small part of the total effort,
taking about 5 minutes for a run of up to 8 copies on my perforator.

Both CMR and SMR charge $25 to read the roll and run a trial copy for
comparison, and $25 for a minimum run of five copies. Add boxes and the
total is about $60. Labels are additional. SMR will make single boxed
copies for $18, plus the reading fee, for a total of $43. For $17 more
one gets up to five copies.

The answer to Erik's questions is that small numbers of rolls can be
recut, but not at less than the small run cost. For further info
contact CMR at rtonnesen@comcast.net or SMR at perforator@sbcglobal.net
