Keystone Reissues Ampico 20-to-1 Rolls
By Larry Doe

Today, August 8, 2008, Keystone Music Roll Company has recommissioned
one of the original Ampico perforators, outfitting it with a MIDI
interface and a new gear set, to reissue digitally remastered 20-to-1
titles. To see this perforator in operation, go to:

It seems that the master stencils for popular music of the 1920's were
not retained by Ampico because of the short time span in which the
music remained "on the charts." It was probably thought the music
would fade into oblivion. Now we know the opposite is true. Many of
these tunes are timeless; but they survive only in the form of original
piano rolls. Thanks to MK4 scanning technology and Warren Trachtman's
ScanMIDI to PunchMIDI converter software, it is now possible to re-
master many of these precious recordings and reissue them on original
Ampico perforating equipment.

Over the past twenty-four hours, several hundred new rolls have been
cut. A new catalog is in the making and should be available soon. For
more photos and information, see the update to be posted Sunday, August
10, 2008, on http://doesigns.spaces.live.com/
