1960s Aeolian Artist Clyde Ridge
By Jeffrey R. Wood

Quoting directly from the very first catalog issued around 1960
by Aeolian Music Rolls:

"... about our staff ... Vern Elliott, head of recording department,
was chief recorder and arranger for POP rolls, when player piano
rolls were in their original heyday. In the West, his old rolls sell
at a premium. Mr. Elliott excels in waltzes and ballads.

"Clyde Ridge has played and arranged for some of the most popular
stars in the country, among which are -- Kay Starr, Gogi Grant, Ginny
Greer, and many others. You will enjoy his peppy modern arrangements
of many hit tunes and dance numbers.

"Bob Sawyer has played with some of America's outstanding bands and
was with Mr. Elliott in the old POP roll days. His playing technique
is styled much like the fine old player arrangements of the 20's."

Other names found on Aeolian rolls from the early sixties include Hank
Sylvester, Dan Bollinger, Harry Butler, Frank Miller and Bonnie Burtness.

Aeolian had a lot of problems with these early rolls. Many did not
track well as a result of using pre-trimmed paper. Rolls were mastered
to play at unusually slow tempo settings and contained many errors. The
company finally hired J. Lawrence Cook away from QRS to straighten out
the mess, which he did with considerable success. Some of Cook's finest
work may be found on Aeolian music rolls.

Not all the original arrangements were redone by Cook. Eventually the
Aeolian roll business went to Harold Powell (Klavier Music Rolls), and
then to Keystone Music Rolls in Pennsylvania. Thus, some of these old
master rolls by Ridge and others may remain in existence to this day.
