Musical Box Spring Won't Wind Up
By Don Caine

Dear Ms. Jones, There could be several reasons why your mechanism
may not be winding up. If it winds and winds and winds without
resistance, then the main spring is either broken inside its housing or
it has become detached from the central shaft or its exterior/interior
retaining clip. There could also be a broken or cracked gear in the
drive train that is slipping and not allowing tension to be built up
on the spring.

You mentioned transport, so there is a possibility of shock damage
or dislocation of parts that can occur where the exterior packaging
appears fine but the contents took a jolt internally -- especially
if the interior packaging was not really snug or some parts, like the
crank handle, weren't secured and damaged some other part.

There are too many possible variables to know much more from your
description. Please call me to discuss and diagnose your particular
problem in more detail.

Most sincerely,
