Piano Roll Copyright Problem
By Robbie Rhodes

Jon "Maddog" Hall is the Executive Director of Linux International
( http://www.li.org ), an end-user organization for Free and Open Source
Software (FOSS). He also enjoys mechanical music instruments and
is a member of AMICA.

In his blog hosted at the web site of Linux Magazine, Mr. Hall tells
of his desire to share his piano roll tunes on the Internet so people
can hear what they sound like:

"As a Free Software person and a follower of the issues around
copyright I would be careful to use a melodie that was long out
of copyright, like 'Greensleeves'. But something in the back
of my mind began to nag me, so I sent email to one company who
still manufactures player piano rolls and asked to talk to their
  legal department."

Mr. Hall's article recounting his conversation can be viewed at
http://www.linux-magazine.com/content/view/full/43309

A related article by Mr. Hall, about a request for donations to a
suspected lobbying entity named "Legislative Fund for the Arts",
is at http://www.linux-magazine.com/content/view/full/43239
