Symphonion Gold Lacquer Finish
By Mark Buckland

While in the process of restoring a Symphonion, in a very neglected
state, it has been necessary to remove the coloured finish to all the
brass parts on the bedplate. This in itself was a tricky operation
as the finish tried its best to resist all the solvents at my disposal
including acetone, methylated spirit and paint stripper. (I managed
the job finally with steel wool).

I want to create the very distinctive golden lustre that Symphonion,
in particular, used extensively. Coloured lacquers are available
but as yet I have not managed to match the colour to my satisfaction.
Also, the lacquers are the brush-on variety that are very difficult
to apply without brush marks. I have not managed to source a spray
type lacquer, other than clear, that is with no added colouring.

Can anyone advise me on how to proceed based on their own experience?
If there is a product out there that will give polished brass the
colour I am striving to achieve I would be very grateful.
