Mechanical Music in the Movies: "The Doll"
By Philippe Rouillé

"The Doll", a movie by Ernst Lubitsch

Dear MMDs, A friend told me about a wonderful early movie by
Ernst Lubitsch (1919). The subject is a free fantasy from
"The Olympia" of "The Tales of Hoffmann," by Offenbach. Very
enjoyable, the added music is interesting and not invading,
65 minutes.

At circa 23 minutes, and for a small minute, you'll view a real
German barrel organ, playing with a monkey. It can be viewed
freely on the web on a French TV web site until February 8th on
http://videos.arte.tv/fr/videos/la_poupee-6357604.html

(The main titles are in German, subtitles in French, but the story
is not difficult to follow, so expressive are the faces of the
actors of this silent movie!)

If too late, you'll probably be able to view it elsewhere...

Most kind regards,
Philippe Rouillé
Paris (France)

 [ At http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tales_of_Hoffmann :
[ "Act 1 (Olympia) -- Hoffmann's first love is Olympia, an
[ automaton created by the scientist Spalanzani. Hoffmann falls in
[ love with her, not knowing that Olympia is a mechanical doll."
 [
[ In Lubitsch's fantasy film, the mechanical doll is accidentally
[ broken so the creator's daughter takes the place of the doll!
