Slipping Control Shaft in Half D-A Expression Box
By John Phillips

Hello again, MMD. This query concerns my other Steck, which is
a Half Duo-Art and was manufactured in the UK. I have a problem
with the lever that controls the position of the knife valve inside
the expression box; this is the lever that is pulled up and down by
the single set of accordion pneumatics. It is slipping on the shaft
that connects the external controls to the knife valve. Unlike the
levers on Full Duo-Arts, which possess a lock screw and a set screw,
the lever on the Half D-A has only one screw.

The original screw had the usual straight groove head, which was
badly chopped about, indicating that those who had gone before me had
struggled with it. I have replaced this chopped-out screw with a hex
head screw that fits the thread in the lever and takes a 7/64" hex key.
My son-in law has loaned me a long-arm key, but -- even this, with me
exerting so much torque that I'm scared of busting his key, let alone
chopping out the head of the new screw -- the shaft and lever are still
slipping.

I guess I could try a drop of Lock-Tite on the shaft but that might
prove to be too permanent a solution. I'll be grateful for any
suggestions; this is the last obstacle in the way of my having fully
rebuilt the player... I think.
