Reproduco Piano-organ Power Consumption
By Robbie Rhodes

MMDer Ray Bauer is finishing the installation of his Reproduco
piano-organ that was recently restored by Brian Thornton. The organ
blower, and the box pump and motor for vacuum, will soon be installed
in the basement beneath the instrument.

Ray took measurements of the power and motor temperature (both motors
are rated for operation at 110 VAC). The case temperature of the
Emerson motor driving the box pump was measured using an infra-red
thermometer. With air from an old office desk fan at medium speed
blowing across the motor, after one hour operation the motor case
temperature stabilized at about 100 degrees F. The blower motor runs
cooler.

Total power consumption of the blower motor plus vacuum pump motor was
measured with an in-line wattmeter and ammeter:

60 Hz mains voltage: 118.9 to 120.1 volts while running
  starting current: 25 amperes peak
running current: 8.8 to 8.9 amperes
starting power: 1921 to 1991 watts
running power: 1050 watts cold, 1035 warm

Because of the high starting current, Ray has dedicated a branch
circuit with a 20-ampere circuit breaker, connected with 12-gage wire
to a heavy-duty 20-ampere grounded receptacle on the wall nearby the
pump housing.
